The rooms of vasistas are located in an old Berlin neighborhood. In an environment with an extremely lively »Berlin mix« they serve as the starting-point to your stay. The majority of the buildings are from the turn of the century, but there are also some that are far older, going back all the way to the baroque age, all of them however are well restorated, (The »Schloss Charlottenburg«, built 1699, is in the immediate surroundings). They give the neighborhood, an impression typical of Berlin a unique blend of different urban environments. There are many street-cafés, small restaurants serving specialties and a few bizarre shops in the neighborhood.
vasistas carries a meaningful name. In French one refers to a little roof window or the so called fighter window as vasistas. The light enters the room from high above and illuminates it.
In the 18th century, Germans, encountering the fighter windows and wondering about the peculiar design, apparently asked the French builders the question: "Was ist das?". And so, since 1798, this word has appeared in French dictionaries.
With its program, vasistas seeks to question interpretation and perceptibility, as well as the illumination of selected artistic aspects a meaningful place.
